Artist Statement
In the early 1990’s, I caned my first rocking chair that I carried out of the Hillsville Flea Market in pieces. Encouraged by my success with this restoration using the time-honored hand-woven 7-way cane pattern, my interest in this craft grew as I explored refurbishing other chairs and rockers. While researching the internet, I found several beautiful hand-woven cane patterns for rockers and chairs. Finding these interesting cane patterns lead to my refurbishing more antique pieces available from flea markets, yard sales, and antique malls into beautiful chairs and rockers using these classic Appalachian patterns, such as Daisies and Buttons, Daisy Chain, Double Victoria, Spider Weave, Star of David, and Lace. Today, I use these beautiful cane patterns to rejuvenate antique rockers and chairs into honored family heirlooms at my home in Telford, TN. I also do custom hand-woven caning and have designed new unique cane patterns such as the delicate 9-Daisy Square. In addition to the restorations, I offer classes in seat weaving for those interested in learning this beautiful craft.
