Company/Business Sugar Shack Studio
Artist Statement Materials and Techniques Jewelry Lapidary – Natural and lab grown material (precious and semi-precious) is transformed into faceted gemstones and cabachons. Various cuts are hand faceted with precision using meet-point faceting. These designs are optimized for each gemstone to maximize their natural brilliance. Cabachons are cut from slab rough with a keen eye for selection and orientation of each stone. Both free-form and calibrated shapes are part of his work. All stones are shaped, smoothed, and polished requiring excellent hand / eye coordination. Silverwork -Lost Wax Casting methods are used with sterling silver to cast organic items. This includes the use of tree bark, seeds, nuts, twigs and leaves. Investment is mixed and poured into a flask that houses these organic elements attached to a wax sprue. Silver is melted and poured into these pre-heated flasks which fills the negative space formed from the burned out elements. After deburring, filing and polishing, these cast items are incorporated into pendants and pins with the assistance of Marlon's wife, Kathy. Additional Information Kathy and Marlon Davey are a wife and husband team.
