|For me there is something magical in taking raw materials known as “earth materials”, minerals, rocks, soil and water to create beautiful natural objects that are also functional. That I can lend an artistic eye to the process and let my imagination roam is essential to who I am. I’m an artist (messy one), nature lover, teacher, gardener, reader, cook (again messy) and general do-it-yourselfer among other things. Hypertufa and cement work allows me to do and be most of that.|
Inspired by nature and a need initially, I happened upon hypertufa quite by accident one day while googling a gardening question but it was when I went shopping to replace a concrete birdbath that cracked over the winter that I was reminded how heavy (and Non crack proof) concrete is and instead left with tufa making ingredients. Thus began my odyssey into hypertufa and cement art.
I work with my whole body. Whether it is a painting or 3-D sculpture, my hands and fingers are plunged into the medium until my whole body is involved in the process of shaping, painting, flinging, patting, pushing, carving, cutting, adding and layering my way up and into a work. Hypertufa and cement work was a natural evolution for me. I love that people can pick them up, hold them, feel them, learn about them, use and enjoy them.
As I go forward, I’ll stay with many of my basics (Love, love, love gardeners, salt of the earth folk and they keep me grounded! Pun intended) but am exploring the whimsical expression of sculptural pieces where I can make a statement, bring awareness or simply delight. I made a series of “Breast Cancer Awareness” Harvest Divas in October which was a labor of love but the best was that I met some very wonderful, empowering and courageous women as a result.
