Artist Statement
Having been a professional potter since 1968, Charles has experienced a multitude of accomplishments through the years.
He studied at Middle Tennessee State University, apprenticed under Lewis Snyder of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and taught at Columbia State College for 5 years. The first year of introduction of Opryland in Nashville found Charles as the Resident Potter. He presently teaches arts and crafts once a week at the Center for Living and Learning, a school for the mentally challenged in Franklin.
The uniqueness of design and character in Charles’ work is recognized and cherished by many friends and loyal customers. He is known for his intricate cut-outs, hand painted decorations featuring horses, trees, cats and dogs, as well as his highly collected wheel-thrown miniatures
He has exhibited in fine arts and crafts fairs throughout the southeast since 1968 with his wheel-thrown porcelain and stoneware pottery. He was awarded the Lifetime Membership into the Foothills Craft Guild for over 40 years of loyal service and participation.
Other exhibitions he currently participates in includes Tennessee Association of Craft Artists, the Museum of Appalachia Homecoming in Norris, and Art in the Park at Blowing Rock, North Carolina.
