Artist Statement
Over the years, my work has been extensive in the cultivation of diverse artistic disciplines for creative expression. To transpose my thoughts into paintings, sculptures, or installations, I use a plethora of colors, supports, materials, and found objects. I am currently exploring a fusion of abstractionism and portraiture to present my ideas perspicuously across disciplines.
I am an interdisciplinary artist driven by fidelity to my African heritage, quenchless curiosity about the world, and an undying love for art. Perpetually drawing inspiration from people and rich African cultures, I imbue my works with onaism and patterns of African fabrics. Onaism entails the contemporary replication of traditional Yoruba art through shapes, motifs, and patterns. As an ode to all cultures, and a signification of my identity, symbols of onaism abound in my work.
My work examines people, places, and psyches. To excellently portray them, I employ symbolism and allusion with artistic adroitness. As a result, the materials and medium for executing each work are carefully chosen to include symbols or allusions. Otherwise, they are carefully construed to create symbols or allusions in themselves.
Patterns, shapes, and colors make a star of my work. In recent years, I combine them with various fabrics, locally woven mats, and other objects to enhance the excellence of my renditions. Together, they lend luminousness to my craft, and play important roles in my artistic storytelling. Beyond this, since the communion of diverse materials necessitates a delicate marriage of old and new techniques, the resulting artworks exude artistic accurateness, and moot benefic conversations.
