Artist Statement
In 1993 I started learning the basics of blacksmithing: working and molding hot metal with hammer and anvil. I developed as a smith and my interest in Colonial American History took over. My love of history drove my work deeper into the research of 17th and 18th century, American made pieces and the techniques used to create them. My research revealed a very high level of craftsmanship, skill, and creativity used by our ancestors. I strive to recreate those early American craftsmen?s attributes in my blacksmith work. The elements used to craft our pieces are all hand made at Red Tail Forge Works in Fairview, Tennessee. I use many of the same materials, tools and 300+ year old smithing techniques to create useable, practical and traditional art that can be used and passed down in the new owner?s family for many generations. My goal is to create original pieces and recreate historical pieces while maintaining the art, practice and history of the Colonial American Blacksmith.
