Artist Statement
Caroline was born in Germany where she completed university with an MA in Japanese studies. Her thesis concerning the Japanese folk craft movement prompted her interest in ceramics and a change of profession. She studied ceramics at the Penland School of Crafts and has assisted her mentors McKenzie Smith, Will Ruggles and Douglass Rankin in several workshops.
Caroline has been an independent studio potter for the last 15 years.
She presently resides with her family in Nashville. With her husband opening one of Nashville’s finest restaurants she became interested in creating functional restaurant tableware. In the last 5 years she has worked with nationally acclaimed chefs to create tableware for their restaurants: Husk Nashville, 1892, The Butcher and Bee Nashville, Hemingway’s Bar and Hideaway and Silo.
Her work is thrown on a Leach style treadle wheel, using a local high fire stoneware clay that is fired to cone 11 in a gas reduction kiln. She enjoys making simple functional wares with warm organic surfaces in the hope to enhance a dialogue between user and maker, food and vessel.
Outside of the restaurant industry her work can be found in various galleries throughout the Southeast. She is a professional member of Tennessee Craft and the local artist group InfluxNashville.
