Artist Statement
As an object maker I can relate to the pursuit of quality and perfection. The creation of object-oriented art is my primary focus. Underlying my fascination with object and materials is a driving need to create. My intent is to highlight the poetic qualities inherent in materials and objects.
Creating with glass has struck a strong chord deep within me, it satisfies me on many levels. Glass gives me a genuine feeling of an honest days work. It provides a renewed challenge in an ever-changing environment. The transformation of glass from start to finish is just shy of miraculous. There is an underlying beauty inherent in the material at any stage of creation. I find glass truly fulfilling and challenging.
My current body of work exploring Millefiori paperweights dovetails with my passion for design. As an instructor of Art Foundations; I use the paperweight format as a means to implement the elements and principles of design. Line, Shape, Texture, Value, and Color paired with my unique style; guide the development of the work. Pattern creates visual interest as the eye is guided around and into the complex designs. Beyond beauty and formal elements the use of imagery via picture canes, has allowed me to create a personal narrative with the object. The imagery serves as a marker for the visual story, recalling specific events or periods.
