My current body of work is a direct reflection of my desire to bring more beauty into the world. After four years active duty in the Airforce and two years as a government contractor in the same career field, in the early 2000's, and seeing some of the worst of humanity, I have been determined to create beauty for others to enjoy in everyday life. The process of creating these pieces have also been very healing as well. The inspiration for the designs of the cut outs come from many different places including, nature, Indian mandala designs, Moroccan art, Gothic architecture, and everyday life experiences. Each piece starts with porcelain clay, then wheel thrown, altered with cut out designs, sometimes altering the shape, and finally glazed with homemade glazes. I try to push the boundaries of what I think the clay can handle as I cut out each design, which feels like I'm also pushing my own boundaries of what I'm comfortable with creating. Two of my biggest influences in my art are Jennifer McCurdy and Eric Sterns. They both do cut out work, and though vastly different, have both inspired me to begin creating a cut out style of my own. As the body of work expands, I hope to explore new designs, new glaze techniques, and new subject matters dealing with society, nature, and concepts of healing.
