Artist Statement
My handwoven tapestries reflect my Dutch-Indonesian heritage. My work is inspired by the colors and imagery of Javanese batik fabrics, shadow puppets and hand carved dance masks. The imagery of my tapestries often captures tempo doeloe, a sense of nostalgia and mythology of a bygone era of the former Dutch East Indies, now known as Indonesia. Additionally, I incorporate colors and concepts from my Dutch heritage, including Delft blue pottery, tulip fields and architecture along the canals. The intent of my handwoven tapestries is to draw the viewer into the mystery and folklore evoked by the nostalgia of a distant past.
