Artist Statement
Janet is a devoted wife, mother, Boston terrier lover, and retired third grade school teacher. Her love of clay and pottery began at an early age with her grandmother’s pieces from Blue Ridge Pottery. As a new wife, Janet worked altering wedding dresses while her husband finished his architectural degree. Her love of fabrics led her into artistic quilting. She was very involved with a guild for many years. However, with raising a son and her commitment to teaching she placed her creative energy into collecting, since time did no permit learning a new craft. Janet has an extensive collection of both artistic and functional pottery as well as other unique and original art pieces. Janet’s collection, as well has her home and garden, are Asian inspired.
After retirement, she began taking pottery classes and soon developed her own style transferring the Asian simplicity of lines, shape, and the complexity of texture as elements in her creative process. When she is not helping others or working on her pottery, she can be found by her pond. The peace and tranquility of her garden with the sun glistening on the Koi pond, the soothing sounds from her unique bells, chimes, and song birds are the inspiration for her Serenity Artistic Design pieces. It is her hope that her art can convey this serenity and peace with the viewer.
