A mixture of traditional goldsmith, silversmith, and blacksmith techniques are used to create gold and silver jewelry, predominately through a modified repousse technique I developed in 2002. Other techniques include hand forged gold and sterling silver; 14K, 18K gold and sterling silver sand casting, and hand made/hand soldered bracelets and chains in sterling silver and 14K gold.
My techniques predominately derive from techniques reverse engineered using my training in historic archaeology and museum conservation. Most of my tools date from the 18th and 19th C. Many of the tools were gifted from a goldsmith who survived the Holocaust. All of the work is done by me from initial design to final polishing. There is no mass production of designs or jewelry. No work is licensed for reproduction.
B.A. in Archaeology and History with a minor in Classics, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa (1987) from UNCG. Attended Boston University studying Historical Archaeology before I was offered the chance to learn traditional gold smithing by "two old Guys," took a leave of absence from grad school to study the art and craft of gold smithing. Opened my own studio (Barking Dog Jewelry) specializing in traditional (historic) techniques using the old tools in 1998.
