Artist Statement
The question is always the same after someone sees one of the fine writing instruments I designed and created, “How did you do that?” My answer is “a miracle.” For someone that cannot draw a circle round or a square with straight lines, it amazes me to this day that God gave me the talent and skill to design and handcraft custom, fine writing instruments. The processes and techniques I use are similar to other pen makers. They require patience, skillful eye, and an attention to detail. Each writing instrument starts as a dream or imagination. • Identify the pen you would like to create. • Identify the materials that you would like to use. • Imagine. Design. Create. Each writing instrument is turned on my lathe in my studio in Nashville, TN. I personally pick each material that is going to be used in the creation of my writing instruments. For example, using abalone requires patience. Each individual strip of abalone is cut and then applied to the tube in which the pen will be made from. The abalone is then cast in clear epoxy resin and cured for 24 to 48 hours. Once cured, it is placed on the lathe and turned until it meets the diameter of the pen. I use a 21 step finishing process to a glass like finish and assembled into an exquisite writing instrument. As a collector of fine writing instruments, from Mont Blanc, to Pelikan and Waterman, I have always enjoyed collecting and writing. My favorite is pen is a fountain pen and I only use the highest grade fountain nibs available. When I found that I could create writing instruments on my own, my passion led me to where I am today. I have had the privilege of handcrafting a pen for a former President of the United States. I now help educate other pen makers and serve as an Administrator for the Middle Tennessee Penturners. Thank you for reviewing my work. Our Motto: Write.With.Inspiration
