Artist Statement
While working toward my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Sculpture, I had the rich opportunity to engage with young adults as an outdoor counselor. This experience motivated me to pursue a career as an art educator. Since that time, my interactions with students, other artists, and my own personal growth have shifted my early focus in metals to clay and wood. These materials speak to my strong connection to the environment and my love for the outdoors. I have been actively engaged with my career as an art educator and working artist since 2003. My clay studio has been an active part of my life and teaching throughout this tenure. Working with clay led me to search out artists with the same focus and pursuit, which led me to the Tennessee Arts And Craft Association, now Tennessee Craft. I have maintained a connection with this group and similar craft organizations for the past twelve years.
Although functional and sculptural clay continue to be a primary focus, I enjoy complimenting it with wood. A few years ago looking for new direction in my work, I began framing reflections of landscapes and nature in deliberate combinations of clay and wood. I harvest much of the wood myself and utilize hand tools as an integral part of the construction and finishing process. Depth, texture, and craft is always my focus as an artist. My work is based on elements and principles of design, as well as a desire to blend clay and wood in harmonious ways. Heavily influenced by my connection to the outdoors, my work is created with an understanding of fine craft, technique, and composition engaging form over concept.
