Artist Statement
Bound Resist, the oldest known method of fabric surface design, dates back to the dawn of civilization.
Since 1979 it has brought forth deep energies and emotions from my soul. I use a 15-Day process with
complex steps and state-of-the-art materials and concepts.
1: Garments are logged in a session plan, inspected for flaws, scoured of surfactants, kept moist and
intricately tied specific to multiple patterns.
2: Fiber-reactive dye formulas are figured in session plan, powders measured, and chemical solutions are concocted.
3: Dyes are mixed periodically to insure brilliance. Precision of application and ongoing cleanup during each part of the dye process is necessary.
4: A 24-hour incubation in humidity-controlled chambers help the dyes bond with and become the fibers.
5: The rinse process uses specific pH and regulated temperatures during 6 cycles, insuring colorfastness.
Garments are then dried, heat-set, blocked, hand-signed, tagged with description and added to inventory.
