Artist Statement
I see my work as a passive activist seeking a change of consciousness for those who view my work. To remind the viewers to remember the spirit of those who came before us and that there is a symbiotic relationship spiritually within all living things. To remember to tap into the ancient wisdom of the medicine guides who watch over us and to embrace the animal, birds, ocean life and even the insects as part of our whole being.
This body of work invites the viewer to dive into the organic non-secular world of faceless medicine spirits that could be from any ancient culture in the world or another world. The Goddess’s with their familiar animal consorts and the anthropomorphic robed birds and animals leads us down into our ancient memory of our ancestors. Each painting is a iconic prayer and I am directed to what I will paint from either my own experience with encountering an animal or bird. Or from news stories about a species in trouble whether it be close to extinction or sick from a humans action.
