The sculpture I produce is called Assemblage, often referred to as the three dimensional cousin to collage. It is produced utilizing found objects, both natural and man-made. These materials are gathered from various sources, The character of each work of art is unique depending on the selection of materials used. Although some works are thematic, whereby the materials create and support a common narrative, most are abstract in nature, Construction of my work is accomplished through the use of common hand tools and elements, such as screws, dowels, solder and adhesives.
I believe that interpretation of my work is dependent on the viewer's ability to suspend notions regarding an object's original purpose. By doing so the viewer is able to perceive objects as simple abstract shapes which, when combined into an integrated assembly, form relationships which are new and unique. Viewers often become amused or surprised when they realize that simple objects they otherwise knew become transformed through this integrative process. In addition, I believe that the viewer has some appreciation of the fact that many of the objects they recognized have been salvaged and repurposed versus being discarded. Display of the work can be free standing, wall hung or suspended.
My hope is that the work I produce sparks the imagination of the viewer in a way that allows him/her to perceive objects in a new light, to break out of previous perceptions that were fixed. It doesn't matter if these perceptions match those of the artist. This shared interpretive experience is what forms the bond between artist and patron .It is only at the point where the viewer lends their interpretation to the artist's work that it becomes whole.
