Artist Statement
My art is a future anthropology; the study and exploration of imaginary ship wrecks and philosophical archeological digs, revealing the artifacts and mechanisms discovered within. I create ancient objects suggestive of ceremonial fetish regalia, the ornamentation of an unknown people. These amulets and talismans are anachronistic relicts. Some appear to have been mechanical, yet now their purpose is unknown, thus creating mystery, which increases the future value of a thing. Constructed with lampworked glass, electro-formed copper, wood and other found objects, each piece sculpted, unique unto itself Lampwork allows me to use high temperatures and my unique pallet of elemental glass colors to discover the Nature of Reaction. Flame chemistry simultaneously finesses and forces new color combinations, possibly never before seen. Using graphite and brass tools (many of my own design), I form the glass by spinning its molten form (much as a potter does on a wheel) while blending and layering color, painting with glass until I know balance and harmony. I then choose which sides to flatten, transforming the 3-D form into 2-D landscapes. The copper electroforming machine (which I built), allows me to atomically bond salvaged copper onto my lampworked glass. Electrically hardened copper makes a strong and organically detailed finish, reminiscent of a very old object, which may have been under the sea for 100’s of years… My Identifiable and Functional Objects include: marbles, cabinet knobs, lamp pulls, apothecary bottles, ear rings, hair sticks, pendants, buttons, divining pendulums, medicine bags, solar system replicas, cremation ornamentation, and kaleidoscopes.
