Artist Statement
My work has always been influenced by traditional Western and Asian pottery forms that initially appear simple, buoyant, and still, but upon closer inspection relay the complex yet harmonious play between form and surface with lightly incised surfaces, bold brushwork, and layered glazes.
Attention to detail allows pots to reveal themselves over time: visually heavy forms are lifted by feet, lids are pointed and roof like suggesting primitive architecture, pots are separated into registers with horizontal lines to create quiet rhythms with overall patterns.
Technically, my work is fired in cone 10 reduction to enhance the layered surfaces, creating clay surfaces that seem to have been exposed to the elements. Carved clay reveals itself, like fossils, from beneath the glaze.
Reinforcing these ideas comes from consistent new visual impetus and interaction with students and teachers who remind me every day why being and artist is a joyful experience.
