We are continuing our series spotlighting the newest cohort of our Master Artist Apprentice Program, a program providing a great opportunity for budding artists to learn under a master of their craft.
This week’s spotlight is on glassblowers Scott Hodes and James DePuy.
Scott Hodes has been a glass blower since 1989. He began his craft journey taking classes at the University of Wisconsin-Madison while studying to be a veterinarian. From there, Hodes developed his craft and has taught glassblowing in workshops, camps, and undergraduate classes,. He is greatly involved in the art community, and has taken on many leadership roles in various craft organizations. Hodes joined the Master Artist Apprentice Program because, in his words:
I enjoy teaching and find it important for apprentices to learn as much technical information as possible in order to avoid wasted time and frustrations later in the process.
James DePuy has been working with basic glassblowing techniques for three and a half years and admits:
This is the most difficult thing I have ever done!
He is constantly learning and is challenged to be better through his experiences with glass. By working with Scott Hodes, DePuy hopes to gain the skills to create everything he imagines and to develop his own unique style. He also hopes to eventually be able to pass along his knowledge to others in an effort to continue the glassblowing tradition.
Stay tuned to see updates on their progress together throughout this year!
