Artist Statement
I am a “self-taught” emerging artist with particular passion for the challenge of creating figurative art in wood. I draw inspiration from people: plain, simple, hardworking, blue-collar individuals and from traditional craft: knowledge passed from generation to generation. I hope in a world of technology and mechanization, that the hardworking hands of a new generation of artists, clinging to a rich history that values perseverance required for excellence in fine craft, will help bring much overdue recognition to the passion and love poured into the quilts of my grandmother, the wooden handcrafts of my grandfather, and the “folk” art of so many underrepresented folks who never quite made the headlines but, instead, brought a great deal of joy to those who were touched by their work. In this pursuit, I hope to blur the lines between folk and “conceptual” “fine” art while preserving fading traditions as we, in unity, celebrate those who laid the foundations for our voices and inspire a new generation to sing for themselves.
