My artwork inhabits several media: functional ceramics, sculpture, and assemblage paintings.
My sculptures and paintings deal specifically with personal issues of cultural identity and subjective interpretations of beauty. New York art critic Kim Levin once described work I had in an exhibit as: "hybrid fountain-reliquary-fireplace-bathhouse sculptural objects, pieced together from bits of religious and secular detritus and kitsch, making use of his training in ceramics, function as hybrid repositories of cultural identity." I am presently interested in looking beyond a specific narrative to find the simple beauty in the timeworn appearance of everyday objects and surfaces created by processes of layering paint, sanding, patching etc. In referencing these objects and processes, whether natural or man made, I combine them to create layers of visibility that work to reveal and cloak at the same time. It is important for me to continue to attempt to bridge the various mediums that I utilize, and build a universal relationship among the works that I create.
The pottery that I make consists primarily of functional high-fire stoneware and porcelain vessels. I am drawn to many of the classical forms repeated throughout the history of ceramic vessel making. What is important for me to reveal with my pottery is a dedication to that form while applying an introspective approach to decorating each individual work. This is what differentiates my work from many of the production potters working today.
