Artist Statement
Cathy and Her Dad began as a hobby and as a means to keep my Dad’s brain active. He had recently retired from work and all of us had noticed a decline. He was sleeping later, not eating well, watching too much TV, and generally starting to slip away.
Step 1 – We had a workshop built on his property. It was 12 feet by 24 feet. I blinked twice and he started an addition to his workshop. Suddenly, it was 12 feet by 48 feet.
Step 2 – W e arranged for climate control for the hot summer months and the cold winter days.
Step 3 – One at a time, we started buying tools for his workshop in order to see in what he may have an interest. He clearly had an interest in the lathe and woodworking.
Step 4 – We enrolled in a pen making class at Woodcraft in Franklin, TN.
Step 5 – We followed up with bowl and pepper mill classes at Woodcraft.
By this time, my Dad was spending days which began at around 6:30 am until 6:00 pm in the workshop with minimal breaks for lunch. He loved it and so did I. However, now we had a new problem……..we had pens and bowls and pepper mills EVERYWHERE.
Step 6 – I started to register for festivals and craft fairs in and around town to peddle our wares. This was a great way to get my Dad back out among the people and it brought us closer and closer.
So, we just continued making useful things out of wood and applying to craft shows and festivals. This has been going on since 2005 and we have had such good times doing this!
The picture below was the last photo I had taken with my Dad. It was taken at the Tennessee Craft Spring Show in 2015. He went to Heaven at the age of 90 in February, 2016. I miss him terribly. As hard as it has been, I have tried to maintain his craft.
