As a graphic designer and printmaker for all of my adult life, I recently turned toward textiles following an apprenticeship with master artist Jeanne Brady through Tennessee Craft's Master Artist Apprenticeship Program. Since then, I've continued my exploration of textiles and look forward to offering various textile products. Specifically, I work with block-print and silkscreen processes but have recently been exploring Cyanotype as well.
Block printing patterns on textiles involves carving away linoleum on a block leaving the desired design as a raised surface, which is then coated with pigment, and stamped onto the fabric. Each block can only be covered in a single pigment (or blend) therefore multiple colors require multiple blocks and printing impressions. Each printing can have slightly varying results in coverage as well as registration, giving textiles an artistic feel that is nearly impossible with other methods. This technique dates back to ancient civilizations but still stands the test of time.
On the other hand, screen printing patterns on textiles involves creating a negative of original motifs that are to be tiled together for a pattern repeat. The design is burned onto a silkscreen with careful measurements where it will then be printed with permanent pigment onto fabric, one tile at a time. Each impression is printed multiple times with a single pigment therefore, not only is the motif repeated, each color is as well. Multiple colors require multiple screens. Registration is key and can have slight variations.
