Artist Statement
Working with natural materials, plant fibers, pigments, natural dyes, linen, flax, hemp, abaca and cotton I am exploring the endless combinations and possibilities inherent in handmade paper.
My most current work focuses on abaca, a banana leaf fiber, indigo and black walnut dye along with layering, folding, constructing and deconstructing as well as stitching and mark making on the surfaces of these pieces. Inspired by Japanese field clothing, these papers have a worn and patched feel with many patinas and layers of color suggesting age, use and reuse not unlike early American patchwork in its pure form.
