Artist Statement
My work varies between creating handmade journals and small wooden boxes.
If you love books, holding a book in your hands is one of life’s simple pleasures. I create blank journals that are pages waiting to be filled, art for the hand and eye, or both. The books are created using beautiful papers, cloths, and hand torn text papers. They are bound using thread and coptic and French stitch, Japanese stab binding, or hard case binding.
Wooden boxes combine art, form, and function. They’re created from a single block of wood then hand carved or sanded to a smooth finish. Light plays off the surface of the carved pieces for a contrasting touch. Milk paints and oils are used for a safe, natural finish.
I am originally from Asheville, NC where I worked in clinical laboratory medicine throughout my career. In my free time, when not traveling or enjoying nature, I perused the many art studios and galleries around town and took advantage of art classes from the vastly talented pool of artists. I now reside in Rutledge, TN and art is a primary focus of this chapter of my life.
