Artist Statement
I am a Tennessee maker, working primarily in enamel. Enameling is ground glass fired on copper in a kiln. It brings together my fine art training of painting and collage with my graphic design expertise. Enameling is both a quick and slow process—each layer is fired quickly in two minutes, but it takes many applications of sifted enamel powder and applied glass lumps and threads to get the right color and texture or it takes layer upon layer of subtle washes of watercolor or acrylic enamels to get tight detail in my subject matter.
I display my enameling in a variety of methods. For wall pieces, the enamel is mounted on handcrafted ceramics or original non-objective acrylic paintings. The enamel components often are raised above the backgrounds for a three-dimensional assembly. My smaller works are pendants and medallions incorporated into silver or copper and glass settings for fine jewelry.
I also create fabric and hand embroidered collages as studies in design. These stand alone wall pieces often inform the colors, textures, and patterns for my enameling work.
I love color, often experimenting with non-traditional combinations. I like to add visual texture and pattern to create interesting twists on nature and other subject matter or unusual backgrounds.
Over the past few years, I have been fortunate to have studied with world-renowned enamellists from around the United States, England, and Germany. My goal is to bring this knowledge together in the pieces I create.
