Using only traditional photographic equipment and materials, I create an interpretive image of my subjects, which transcends simple representationalism. I prefer to use the larger formats of 4"x5" and 6cm.x7cm. film cameras, which produces a superior quality enlargement. When exposing C-41 color negative film, I often spend up to three days in my studio just to produce a single negative. I use filters and other optical attachments, multiple exposures, and studio lighting to create my work. When necessary I will use the same studio techniques outdoors. My methods are always guided by my personal desire to record on film the personal artistic vision I feel for the subject. My creative approach continues in the darkroom where I alter and combine traditional wet lab materials (RA-4 chemistry and paper) using up to four dichroic color enlargers at one time so as to bring forth that elusive image which speaks from my heart. I work without assistants or apprentices, performing all the creative aspects of my images. I find that any "help" simply alters and dilutes my vision.
My approach in digital imaging continues to embrace my desire to create a unique image that is at once both accurately depicting my subjects, consistent with the realist of the f64 group led by Ansel Adams, yet at the same time transcending simple representationalism in a manner that also embraces the traditions of the 18th century pictorialist, exemplified by William Mortenson. My own personal challenge is to rise above the snapshot, to make a photo that would not exist had I not been the one to make it, it must be uniquely mine. I work with both Nikon & Olympus digital cameras, in three different formats: 4/3rd's, DX, & FX. Utilizing Apple Macintosh computers and Adobe software I make Giclee prints on Epson printers. Although I work with all the newest digital equipment I tend not to "enhance" my work in ways that would not reflect reality. I find all my experience with techniques employed exposing film cameras is directly applicable with digital. My goal remains the making of an interpretive image guided by a personal artistic vision I feel for the subject.
