Artist Statement
I have always enjoyed the beauty of wood.
When I had the opportunity to begin woodworking a few years ago I found that I enjoy hand carving.
I reclaimed timber from our home farm, and began hand carving wooden spoons/utensils in 2017.
Taking advantage of the uniqueness of each piece of wood, each piece is crafted to enhance its beauty
Once the timber is rough cut into slabs of wood I find the area with the most appealing grain. I sketch out the spoon pattern and then rough cut it with a band saw.
After that, the spoon is hand carved and allowed to dry.
Once dry, the spoon receives multiple levels of standing finishing with a 220 grit hand sanding.
The spoon/spatula is then finished with a food safe butcher block oil.
Using primarily cherry and apple, these hardwood spoons are designed to last generations with proper care.
