Description of Work I create abstract backgrounds by melting encaustic wax & pigment on a large heated surface. I transfer results to Japanese paper, similar to creating an ink monotype, then details are created using wax, oil/ink/metal & photos taken by me.

Artist Statement
About my journey: I’ve been a metalsmith for 30+ years, sometimes working as a full time artist, other times part time, and for a brief period, while caring for my elderly mother, not at all. Returning from that hiatus, I found myself wanting to explore a different medium & create a new body of work. Beginning in 2019, I explored a variety of printmaking & encaustic techniques, learning & developing a new language. Creating a new body of work in jewelry is something I can practically do in my sleep. Learning techniques in printmaking comes very naturally as well. But the challenge from 2019 to 2022 was taking those techniques & creating a body of work that spoke to me. Changing mediums is essentially starting over from scratch. Metal comes naturally to me because I’ve worked with it for so long, but it also began as a series of steps & missteps. The process is always evolving & that's exciting to me.
About my work: I create an abstract background by applying encaustic wax & pigment to a large heated surface (hotbox), & transfer the results to various types of Japanese paper, similar to creating an ink monotype but utilizing the hotbox instead of an etching press. I "print" additional layers before adhering the monotype to a wood panel. Additional details are created using wax, oil, ink, metal & photographs that I've taken. My work is inspired by the images I capture, scenes of life seen or imagined & the play of color & light. I tend to create in a mindful way that focuses on the process & how it unfolds; exercising control of the techniques used yet allowing the work to evolve as it will. I like to think my work evokes a sense of calm & serenity, with an occasional touch of joy or whimsy.
