Artist Statement
Jim Ballard
Madison, Tennessee
I have always loved working with wood. I was lucky enough to have gone through a Middle and High School that offered wood working as well as metal shop and drafting. One of my biggest influences was my High School Wood Shop teacher Kenneth Austin. He was the one who taught me humility and patience when it comes to the art of working with wood. Thanks Ken.
It has been nearly 40 years since that first wood working class and my passion continues to grow every day. I would say that turning wood on a lathe has been the most rewarding aspect. There will always be something different about each piece I turn. Discovering something beautiful and unusual deep in the wood itself that is revealed as it is turned is always a great experience.
I especially enjoy turning commemorative pieces for folks that have lost old trees. They are the pieces with the best stories behind them.
My wonderful wife Vanessa never seems to have a problem with the amount of time I spend in my studio. She even informs me of fallen trees that she sees from time to time which inevitably forces me to spend more time away from her. I’m not sure what to make of this. Love ya’ Hon.
Although my hands are periodically cut, bruised and or bandaged, I still have all my fingers. That is a good thing since I do love playing the guitar.
My wish is to continue wood working as long as possible. It is a passion and a talent that I have been blessed with and for that I am very thankful.
