Artist Statement
I like to make art in a variety of forms from high-end wire sculptures to whimsical illustrations.
The wire sculptures allow me to focus on the pure line of a being: an animal, a dancer, a tree. Capturing the underlying geometry of every form is what leads to recognition of the subject. When people see those key shapes that define the subject, there is an Aha! moment and a simple story is conveyed.
The illustrations allow my inner child and sense of humor to run free and build the world just to my liking. I like to capture the sweetest spirits in my animal subjects, imagining how they must see the world. For they seem so content and in the moment. Chalk pastels and oil pastels are my favorite media to work in for illustration. I often outline the chalk pastel characters using calligraphy pens to get those dynamic cartoon lines.
My dad taught me everything. He is an 87-year-old artist living in Indiana and I have studied at his elbow from the beginning. He still knows much more than me.
