Artist Statement
I create fine art photographs. A fine art photograph, is an image that is both artistic and technically well done. Each photograph I make is a window into a world that exists in my mind’s eye but may not be apparent at first glance. I strive to highlight a higher reality through my images. The reality I see is a place where a slightly different point of view results in a completely different rendering of the subject. My images may show a crisp focused reality. They may be abstracted to the point that reality is difficult to see. They may be simply a record of pattern, light and shadow. Sometimes the way my work is viewed depends on the emotional state of the viewer. As a fine art photographer, my goal is not necessarily to record what is obvious but to open a gateway into something mysterious and interesting. I as any artist am compelled to press forward and create. I could not stop creating any more than I could stop breathing.
The images I see in my mind cannot always be recorded through the camera lens. For this reason, the camera I use is of minor importance. The higher reality I see has to be rendered after the camera has recorded the scene. All my images have been processed with Photoshop and the plug-ins from NIK and Topaz. These programs are not used as crutches but as tools to open the door to the reality I document.
I do not follow a theme in choosing my subject matter. I am attracted to patterns and shapes. I am attracted to situations and settings. I visit many places. I see interesting images in and around people on the street. I find a window into this higher reality in seeing ordinary people doing ordinary things. I may or may not interact with the people in my photographs. My subjects run from people to landscapes and seascapes. I do not make formal portraits. I prefer to discover unique qualities in random settings.
I am attracted to images that reflect the history of photography. Many of my images will have a vintage look. Without the foundation laid by pioneer photographers of the past, there is no way to rise to the challenges of the future. In order to accent my appreciation of pattern and shape, I render numerous images in black and white. I have succeeded in my efforts if the viewer can place himself/herself in the world I have portrayed.
