Artist Statement
Beginning with raw materials, including sheet and wire, the metals are molded using traditional and contemporary metalsmith tools, including mandrels, grit papers, roller printers, and flame, enhanced via a propane/oxygen torch system. The texture of the pieces is created using the etching method of engraving to incise patterns into the metal. This consists of designing resist patterns transferred to steel using earth-friendly ingredients, including table salt and copper sulfate. Patination, using potassium sulfides, is used to highlight the negative space, introducing selective oxidation.
