Artist Statement
I have always created art. As an art educator, I have been a painter, jeweler, weaver, potter and sculptor, Now that I am retired, I choose to focus on mixed media work with tile.
Bisque tiles are my canvas. Each tile is layered with 7 coats of various glazes, waxed and then kiln fired to achieve the desired crazing effect. I draw my images on midway through the glazing process. All my images are surrounded in black lines, which add to the illusion of stained glass. Combined with the crazing process, my work takes on a unique quality. I refer to my style as “stained glass batik”. While neither one, it resembles qualities of both. I work from 2” to 12”. Most are framed with wood, others are mounted on distressed steel combined with wood, while some stand alone. Much of my subject matter is derived from nature and is full of whimsy and color.
