As a child, I was fascinated with fairytales and the way they combined magic with reality. Not the “Disney” version…I mean old school fairytales that made you shiver just a bit even though they ended happily ever after. I feel like I have been making art using various mediums since I took my first breath, but finding pottery was the first time I felt like I found my true purpose. Then the Pandemic began, and all of its uncertainty, isolation, and darkness transported me back to the kid who believed in magic, fairies, and hobbits. Influenced by Grimm’s Fairytales and artists such as Munch and Van Gogh, my work incorporates movement in both form and color.
My pottery is primarily functional mid-fire stoneware. I am drawn to the natural world around me, and find many of the forms I build in my own garden in Memphis. I work on the wheel, and I also hand build. Whatever method I use, it is important for my pottery to be both functional and whimsical. I want people to smile, and not be afraid to actually use my pieces. The majority of my pieces are brush glazed, and I use various clay bodies, purposefully leaving portions of the clay body exposed.
