Jewelry

What: Using a multitude of materials and techniques, jewelry makers create small decorative crafts that are meant to be worn.

Materials: gems, metals, stones, clay, wood, fabric, paper, beads

History: More than 40,000 years ago Africans introduced beads as the first form of jewelry. They used shells, animal bones, teeth, stones, string, and sinew to create their jewelry. From there, handmade jewelry materials branched out to include copper, glass, gold, and gems. In some cultures like the Egyptians, jewelry held religious meaning. Other cultures, such as the Aztecs, used jewelry to show their rank, wealth, and power.

Techniques: Metal stamping, wirework, bead stringing
