Artist Statement
As I mature, I more than ever seek tranquility, calm and peace in my life – in the people I seek out, the environment I surround myself with, and in the work I produce. The natural environment invokes those feelings more than any other. The earth, water, sky, clouds, sunlight - all fuel me for the hard parts of life. I attempt to represent those calming elements in my work – to provide a rest and peace to the viewer’s eye.
In my material, I have chosen clay. It offers many opportunities for failure or success in the iterations necessary to produce one piece. However, it is of the earth. It is dipping my hands into the actual purified muck of organic matter produced in the soil. And in manipulating that clay, I strive to form images of those elements of the earth.
My earlier work assembled forms of the floral and sea world, using repetition to mimic the natural way that those objects multiply and divide. My color palate has always focused on the most basic whites and blacks emphasizing the light and shadows. These forms will never leave me and offer me a rest in their production.
More recently, I have experimented with saggar firing, an alternative firing process which applies organic compounds – oxides and carbonates – to the clay which are then burned to develop rich earth colors. Steel produces oranges, copper produces greens and blacks, cobalt produces rich blues. The forms are kept simple and smooth to emphasize the coloration. The results inspire more experimentation to develop new colors and combinations. I am smitten with the process.
