Artist Statement
As an artist I have been fascinated with clay and the vessel as a form of expression. All of my work is thrown on the wheel, some are traditional, some are very contemporary due to alterations made to the form immediately after being thrown. The clay body that I use is a stoneware mix with %15 - %20 of it from the creek behind my studio - there is a lot of clay in Kentucky. Weather the shape is traditional or contemporary, each piece is decorated with a textured design. The texture is achieved by pressing an individual stamp or by rolling a stamp that repeats the pattern in a band in the damp clay. Most of the stamps used I have made from the same clay. Some of the designs are motifs that I have borrowed from several different cultures and a span of over 3000 years. I have several equine stamps having lived in the Bluegrass for almost 20 years and they are the favorites. I finish each piece with my own glaze combinations that are used to highlight the textured designs. All of my work is fired to cone 7 (2210F) in a 33 cubic ft. gas kiln next to my studio. My work covers a wide price ranges and is dishwasher and over safe.
