Artist Statement
I create art that allow people to appreciate the beauty of fine and exotic woods. First, I search for the most distinctive woods. Many of the woods come from remote parts of the globe including the jungles of Africa, the rain forest of Central America and Asia or New Zealand, the holy lands of Middle East. Many exotic woods come from the US. I am always looking for the most distinct or unusual grain patterns so I select some of the highest grades of wood.
I visualize the distinct grains in different objects and listen when the wood tells me what it is destined to become. Many pieces will become vessels, bowls or vases. Others will become boxes or other functional item. Sharing the beauty of the wood is my goal.
I have been working with wood for nearly fifty years. I have mastered a number of tools and processes. I enjoy wood turning as well as the more time-consuming intricate joints for boxes or planning laminates. I often will choose a satin finish with a warm touch that invites you to hold the piece. Some pieces call for a hard, high gloss finish that say look, but don’t touch. Every piece is unique, and hand rubbed finish is a must.
