Tennessee Craft – Southwest

Tennessee Craft – Southwest (formerly MACA) covers Fayette, Lauderdale, Shelby and Tipton counties and is open to everyone interested in fine craft from the beginner to the most accomplished. Artists, students, gallery owners, schools, guilds, co-ops and appreciators are welcome to join. This active chapter is committed to promoting local craft. Shoppers and collectors find our work at craft fairs, trunk shows, art galleries and museums. Member meetings with guest speakers and various outings help individuals succeed and find support in our region.

Dates: October 2020
We’ve taken a show from the past and given it new life! Plans are well underway for a juried gallery-style show at Bingham and Broad, an eclectic maker’s market in the heart of the ever-growing Broad Avenue Arts District. This event will include a physical gallery show thoughout Tennessee Craft Week, a First Fridays show reception (including artist demos) on Friday, Oct 2, and a Facebook Live! virtual stroll through the show on Sunday, October 4.

Although 2020 has been a time of challenge, it’s also been a time for positive change. It has opened windows of opportunity, and allowed time for artists of all media to create in a whole new light. Tennessee Craft-Southwest is partnering with the Woman’s Exchange of Memphis to host a gallery show of amazing serendipitous 2020 art. These pieces will be on display (as well as online) and available for purchase at the Woman’s Exchange October 2-9, 2020, in celebration of Tennessee Craft Week. This event will include a physical gallery show October 2-9, as well as a Facebook Live! virtual stroll through the show on Friday, October 2nd.

Mark your calendar for October 2-11, 2020! Patriot Bank is honored to host the artwork of military veterans: CDR Rose Conway, DCS1 Ben Madden, SP4 Rick Cannon, Sr Airman Dani Sposato, & PFC John Joyner. Where else can you take out a loan and view local art at the same time? Plan a trip to this beautiful, exquisitely-designed Patriotic bank with a small town, friendly atmosphere. In addition, virtual studio tours & interviews will take place on Thursday, Oct 8, at 6:00 PM. Watch for details!


In June, we learned that due to Covid-19, the Memphis Jewish Community Center is pushing all their Fall gallery shows forward into 2021. We have scheduled our Collaborations show for April 2021. The application process will open back up later this year for new submissions. If you were already scheduled to participate, your application and fees will be put towards 2021.

WKNO Fine Craft Showcase
Date: January 2021
The members of Tennessee Craft Southwest produce fine craft in a dazzling array of media and styles. This year’s Fine Craft Showcase is titled, “The Elements – Earth, Air, Fire, and Water,” and the work you submit should reflect this theme. Each artist may submit up to 5 pieces, and judges from the local art scene will select winners for awards. All Tennessee Craft Southwest members are encouraged to participate. Handcrafted for the Hungry, Phase Two
Our 2020 Handcrafted for the Hungry was a success! As soon as all our numbers are tabulated, we’ll be making a check presentation to the Mid-South Food Bank. We’re going to do it again for 2021! We will have clay available in just a few short weeks, so if you are a potter that would like to donate your time and talent, please let us know!!

August Member Meeting

Our most recent highlighted member, Dani Sposato was interviewed, and we also discussed initial plans for a special Tennessee Craft-Southwest Veteran’s event to be held during Tennessee Craft Week–October 2-11, 2020. In addition, we shared some additional member opportunities for Tennessee Craft Week.

Spring Member Meeting
Date: March 8, 2020
Time: 1:00-3:00pm
Our Spring meeting included a supply/equipment surplus sale. Also for our meeting, Rick Cannon and Nancy LaPlace briefly shared their scholarship experiences from 2019. In addition, we discussed the final details of the upcoming Collaborations show and Angela Schneider was on hand to help with the *application process. *NOTE: Applications for Collaborations will NOT be accepted after this meeting on March 8th.

Sharron Barrett shared her experiences from the course she took with her Summer Study Scholarship in 2019, and Mary Bartholomew discussed her quarterly scholarship. We also had a quick “show-and-tell,” and enjoyed pizza!

Tennessee Craft – Southwest Holiday Party

A potluck celebration of the season, including a brief meeting to vote on our 2020 Chapter Board and discuss member meeting/workshop topics for 2020. We had an “Artsy Elf” gift exchange… swapping wrapped gifts representative of our work, and taking home a piece from one of our fellow artists!!!

Tennessee Craft-Southwest and Belltower Artisans Fight Hunger
Date: Tuesday, October 8, 2019
Location: Belltower Artisans, 549 S Highland, Memphis (see map)

Tennessee Craft- Southwest in partnership with Memphis’ Belltower Artisans hosted a makers’ event in support of the Memphis Empty Bowls Project.

The event was a creative group gathering of 9 members and 2 non-members focused on producing soup bowls to be donated to the upcoming Empty Bowls charity event. Proceeds from #theemptybowl project are used to fight hunger throughout the Mid-South.

This #TNCraftWeek2019 event was presented in partnership with Tennessee Vacation #madeintn as part of American Craft Week.


Tennessee Craft – Southwest Member Workshop

“Selling Online” workshop featuring a panel of members with successful online businesses. In addition to the panel, 13 members and 1 non-member attended.


Weave a Scarf in a Day!

Susan Chrietzberg, Nancy Laplace & Rose Conway joined Angela for her “Scarf in a Day” workshop.


Collaborations 2019
Dates: May 3 – May 31
Location: Memphis Jewish Community Center; 6560 Poplar Ave.
A month-long show featured the collaborative art of Tennessee Craft members. Two or more artists of different mediums worked together to produce incredible multi-media art pieces.
